Citrulline is an amino acid that has become a go-to supplement for athletes and fitness enthusiasts concerned about their cardiovascular health. It plays a crucial role in nitric oxide synthesis and blood flow, providing benefits ranging from improving physical performance to promoting better blood vessel health.
What is L-citrulline?
L-citrulline is a non-protein semi-essential amino acid. Citrulline is said to be non-protein because, unlike other classic amino acids, citrulline is not obtained from food.
Only watermelon provides a little (about 1 g per kilo). As a result, all of our citrulline must be synthesized from the intestinal destruction of various other amino acids such as glutamine and arginine. On the other hand, at the kidney level, citrulline is massively converted into arginine.
What are the effects of citrulline?
Citrulline can be used for its anabolic action, for its health benefits or as a sexual booster.
NO Booster
Taking citrulline increases arginine levels in the same way as taking L-arginine directly. This is because some of the arginine supplementation is broken down during digestion, which is not the case with citrulline. The latter benefits from near-perfect absorption.
Following oral intake, urinary losses of citrulline are minimal, which proves that the body's absorption and retention capacities are excellent, even at high doses. Thus, 3 to 6 g of citrulline can double the level of arginine in the blood.
As citrulline promotes blood circulation during exercise, it will play a role in cardioprotection during a sporting event.
This property of citrulline gives it the status of indirect but very effective booster of the production of NO (nitric oxide). NO is a gas, produced by the blood vessels that facilitates circulation at the level of the muscles which increases their oxygenation and congestion. These two properties of citrulline explain why it is used both as a pre-workout booster and as a sexual booster, in particular, in synergy with arginine.
Sexual booster
Our sexual abilities are closely linked to the production of NO. Citrulline is therefore quite capable of compensating for deficiencies or even boosting sexual endurance in men who do not suffer from erection problems. For example, in men suffering from erection problems, taking 1.5 g of citrulline daily allows 50% of users to regain a normal erection (compared to 8% of those using a placebo).
Cardiovascular and immune health
In cardiac patients, oral intake of 3 g of citrulline per day is quite effective in improving blood circulation. In healthy seniors, oral intake of 5.6 g of citrulline per day helps to "rejuvenate" their cardiovascular system.
In healthy young men, 6 g of citrulline enabled the cardiovascular system to better cope with cold-induced stress.
Citrulline is an amino acid important for maintaining human immune activity.
Directions for use
The short lifespan of citrulline in the blood suggests that this amino acid should be used at least 2 times a day (2 capsules in the morning + 2 capsules in the evening) in order to obtain a constant elevation in the blood and therefore increase the anabolic response to training and/or sexual prowess.
If you are only looking for congestion, Nutrimuscle L-citrulline base can be used, if possible with Nutrimuscle L-arginine base, one hour before sports or sexual activity at a rate of 4 capsules at a time.
While some people respond quickly to the vasodilatory effects of citrulline, this is not the case for everyone. It takes 3 weeks of daily use of Nutrimuscle L-citrulline base to determine the individual effectiveness of this amino acid, particularly as a sexual booster.
