Krill oil is still relatively unknown to the general public, yet its benefits for the health of athletes are numerous. A true protector of the heart and the body, its intake fully improves both physical and mental performance.
What is krill?
Krill is a small crustacean that looks like a shrimp but is translucent. It is present in many bodies of water around the world, particularly in the cold waters of Antarctica and the Atlantic Ocean. Krill live in "swarms" that sometimes number between 10,000 and 30,000 individuals per cubic meter. Considered one of the bases of the food chain, it is a key species in the marine ecosystem: whales consume 34 to 43 million tons of it each year. This is why, basically, krill is a term used by Norwegian whalers to designate a group of small organisms used as food for marine mammals.
There are many species of krill throughout the world, over 80 different in total. The most common are Euphausia superba (Antarctic) and Meganyctiphanes norvegica (Atlantic). Each species has different characteristics and benefits.
The benefits of krill oil
Cardiovascular health
The benefits of fatty acids on cardiovascular health are now widely recognized. Krill oil is rich in them and contains on average 159mg of omega-3. This is why krill oil supplementation has beneficial effects on the heart. Krill:
- Helps reduce the risk of heart attack
- Makes the heart beat more regularly
- Lowers heart rate and blood pressure
- Improves blood circulation
- Regulates blood fats
For athletes, krill oil is a strong ally in achieving their performance. It protects the heart and helps fight cardiovascular problems, especially during endurance sports or intense activity (cycling, running, boxing).
Better recovery
The particularity of krill oil is that it contains several active ingredients, some with powerful antioxidant effects: astaxanthin, choline, phospholipids. These compounds help to defend the body by opposing cellular damage caused by free radicals.
- Astaxanthin is a natural nutrient that belongs to the carotenoid family, considered a powerful antioxidant. Its properties are very beneficial in combating oxidative stress, especially in the eyes.
- Choline is an essential nutrient that the body needs to make neurotransmitters that allow neurons to communicate.
- Phospholipids provide better bioavailability, that is, better absorption by the body. They deliver omega-3 and choline to the parts of the body that need them most, such as the brain, heart, eyes and liver.
In case of injury, krill oil relieves inflammation and stimulates physical and muscular recovery. In addition, it therefore protects the integrity of physical abilities and helps you in strength and combat sports.
What about traditional fish oil?
Both oils are an important source of omega-3 and provide many health benefits. However, according to the manufacturers and the quality of the product, krill oil is said to have better bioavailability. In addition, krill consumers can consider taking omega-3 as a supplement to improve the beneficial effects: taking krill oil supplemented with fish oil provides a better level of omega-3. In addition, taking the two oils together provides more numerous effects.
How to choose the right krill oil
Choosing your krill oil is a very important step. Indeed, in order to obtain the best possible results and preserve the effects of the compounds, it is essential to choose a quality oil.
