Les dangers de la vitamine K2

Vitamin K2 is a key nutrient for blood clotting, bone health, and cardiovascular health. Yet, some questions often arise: is it dangerous to take? What are the risks of vitamin supplementation? We explain everything.

Vitamin K2 plays a central role in the body

Like other fat-soluble vitamins, vitamin K2 is stored in the body, particularly in the liver. It plays a role in blood clotting, but not only. Its benefits for cardiovascular health are now well-studied: it helps prevent arterial calcifications and contributes to maintaining the flexibility of blood vessels.

It is also essential for the fixation of calcium to bones, making it an ally for bone health.

When should you be careful with Vitamin K2?

Vitamin K2 is naturally present in certain fermented foods such as fermented soy (natto), aged cheeses, as well as in some green vegetables.

But in case of supplementation, some precautions are necessary, especially for people taking anticoagulant medications. Indeed, vitamin K2 can interfere with the effectiveness of these treatments by modulating blood clotting. In this case, medical advice is essential before considering a food supplement, even if it is low-dose.

⚠️ Note: it is not recommended to exceed the recommended intake (often around 75 to 120 µg per day for an adult), especially if you combine a diet rich in vitamin K2 + food supplements.

Are Vitamin K2 deficiencies more dangerous than excesses?

In reality, vitamin K2 deficiencies are much more concerning than the risks associated with an overdose. A chronic lack of K2 could promote bone fractures, poor calcium absorption, or long-term cardiovascular problems.

In a diet poor in fermented foods or in elderly people, controlled supplementation can therefore be beneficial.

In summary: danger or benefit?

Situation

Real risk?

Moderate supplementation in healthy adults

❌ No known risk

Diet rich in K2 (green vegetables, natto, etc.)

✅ Recommended

Anticoagulant medications (anti-vitamin K)

⚠️ Possible interaction: consult your doctor

Very high dose (>500 µg/day) without medical supervision

❗ Theoretical risk to be avoided

To remember:
Vitamin K2 does not pose any particular danger when consumed in the correct doses, and can even offer valuable benefits for bone and heart health.

Caution is especially important if you are taking anticoagulant treatments. In all cases, the ideal is to aim for a balanced diet, possibly supplemented with well-dosed food supplements.
