"I was overweight, even obese"

I started bodybuilding two and a half years ago, having never played any sport before. I told myself that I had to start because I was overweight, even obese: I weighed 110kg for 1m75.

I started paying attention to nutrition, then I started running and walking a lot, then I bought dumbbells and finally started going to the gym, without any prior knowledge of bodybuilding.

I had always been overweight/obese since middle school. Being heavy is bothersome in everyday life, moving is complicated and tiring. I felt bad about myself, I ate poorly, and looking back, the correlation seems logical to me, but it wasn't at the time.

"At first I had no specific goals"

When I started, the goal was just "I'm losing weight and I'm losing fat". I didn't have a specific goal of a certain number of kilos to lose or anything.

Little by little, and especially 6 months to 1 year after joining the gym, I realized that building muscle was also good. I started watching bodybuilding videos and fell in love with bodybuilding. That's when I told myself I had to give it my all!

Now, the main goal is to lose fat and gain muscle, find a good balance, and continue like this. And maybe compete in 1 or 2 years to take a first step towards this goal and see how the preparation goes.

"I have to get to it, so we'll see!"

I told myself: it's now or never, I have to get to it, so we'll see! It was the right time, so I went for it.

Also, during that period, my grandfather had a health problem, which made me feel bad, and I told myself that sports could help me feel better. It was like a solution to improve my morale.

"My diet helped me tremendously"

My diet helped me tremendously. Besides that, I moved a lot. I walked between 10,000 and 15,000 steps a day. Today, I still track my calories and steps.

When I started, I was extreme, and I wouldn't recommend it. From what I remember, I was consuming 1500-1600 calories a day and would go up to 3000 calories if I wasn't careful. Currently, I'm around 2300 calories.

"I started supplementing about 4-5 months ago"

I watched a lot of videos on the subject and decided to start supplementing about 4-5 months ago. I currently take 5 supplements:

  • Whey

When you have a problem, you look for solutions, and that's what I did, especially since I have a lot of bicep tendonitis. So it was the collagen that helped me a lot. It's not a miracle, of course, but it helps!

For the Whey, it's thanks to my mother. She started bodybuilding a few months ago and doesn't eat much meat, so she needed a protein supplement. So we ordered Whey together.

For Omega 3, it's mainly for the anti-inflammatory aspect because it's very common in my family. And Magnesium was for sleep and recovery.

However, I've been taking Ashwagandha for over a year. I started about 6 months/1 year after I started going to the gym and I saw a difference in my stress and my sleep. Being a very stressed person, I take it in cycles, often during periods of high stress. I stop when I feel better, but generally these are 2-3 month cycles, and I restart when I feel the need.

"Results are quickly visible"

At first, in 6 months I lost 30kg, then I regained some weight, and since then I've been stuck around 80kg.

The "advantage" of being fat is that the results are quickly visible, whether in the mirror or on the scale. I still have photos from the very beginning, and it shows in the stomach, chest, arms, etc. And that gives you good motivation, and I told myself "I started, so I'll finish."

Weight training and nutrition changed my life. It's learned, everything is learned. Learning to eat well = learning to live well.

Yanis' anecdote

I have a crazy anecdote from when I started at the gym. At the time, I didn't know anyone, I went alone, and I hit my personal record on the bench press at 60kg. But I almost got stuck under the bar.

Also, I learned about Nutrimuscle through Denis Gallois and Challenge Accepté. I was accepted and added to the Nutrimuscle Discord server, and I started talking to people and really getting interested in supplementation.
