Pharmaceutical form: a criterion far from insignificant

In the world of pharmaceutical products and food supplements, the method of administration – called the pharmaceutical form – plays a crucial role. It's not just a matter of comfort: the pharmaceutical form determines the speed, location, and sometimes even the intensity of action of the active ingredient.

Whether we're talking about classic oral forms (powders, capsules, tablets) or liquid or sublingual forms, each format has its advantages… and its limitations

Capsule or powder: what are the concrete differences?

The capsule or tablet dilemma is common among supplement consumers. Here are the main points to consider:

  • Capsules are often easier to swallow, as the smooth shell (often of plant or gelatinous origin) slides naturally. They are well suited for active substances sensitive to humidity, as they provide better protection than tablets. They are also suitable for taking small quantities.

  • Tablets, on the other hand, are made by compressing powder and can contain more active ingredient in the same volume. Some can be cut or crushed, which is useful for adjusting doses, or consumed as effervescent tablets or sublingual tablets (to be dissolved under the tongue for rapid action).

Extended-release or modified-release tablets are also common in oral medications, but less common in sports or nutritional supplementation.

And what about powder?

The powder form is often preferred in the sports world or for high-dose supplements, as it allows for greater flexibility in dosing. It is also ideal when you want to combine several ingredients in the same personalized mixture. Moreover, it has a significant advantage as it goes through the first stage of digestion: the mouth.

Therefore, there is better assimilation with powder.

Another advantage : powder forms avoid excipients or compression agents, which are common in tablets. However, they require more preparation (dilution, measurement) and can have a strong taste, especially if it is not masked.

Please note: some substances are very sensitive to humidity, which makes their storage more delicate in powder form.

Making the right choice for your goal

Each format has its uses. Here are some simple guidelines:

  • For rapid absorption or an occasional need: sublingual tablet or liquid;

  • For regular, discreet, easy use: capsule;

  • For customization or a high dosage: powder;

  • If the digestive tract is fragile: opt for digestively neutral forms (gastro-resistant capsules, pre-digested liquid forms).

Finally, some ingredients require regular updates of pharmaceutical knowledge to keep up with innovations: microencapsulation, liposomes, or new targeted release forms.
