Est-ce que ma vitamine C empêche de dormir

Does vitamin C really prevent you from sleeping? This is a widely held misconception: you shouldn't consume vitamin C in the evening for fear of having trouble falling asleep. But what does science really say? Between its effects on the immune system, its role as a powerful antioxidant, and its supposed impact on sleep quality, we take stock of what we know – and what we think we know.

Vitamin C: an essential ally, even at the end of the day

Vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that is involved in the synthesis of many molecules essential to the body, such as collagen, carnitine and certain neurotransmitters. It also plays a key role in supporting the immune system and protecting against oxidative stress caused by free radicals.

Naturally present in many fruits and vegetables, vitamin C is essential for daily life. Kiwis, oranges, peppers and broccoli are particularly rich in vitamin C.

Why is it said that vitamin C prevents sleep?

This misconception probably stems from the fact that vitamin C has a slight toning effect on the body. Indeed, because of its slightly stimulating effect, some people prefer to avoid taking vitamin C in the evening, especially in the form of food supplements.

But to date, no serious study shows that vitamin C significantly prevents sleep. This slight stimulating effect, observed at very high doses and in certain sensitive people, is not enough to alter sleep quality in the majority of cases.

Taking vitamin C in the evening: a real problem?

In most cases, no. There is no official contraindication to consuming vitamin C in the evening, either through food or supplements. A dinner rich in fruits and vegetables will therefore not pose any problems, even at the end of the day.

However, some particularly sensitive people may notice a slight difficulty falling asleep if they take high doses of supplements in the evening. In this case, it is sufficient to shift the intake to the beginning of the day to avoid any discomfort.

Food supplements: should they be avoided in the evening?

If you take a vitamin C supplement (alone or integrated into a multivitamin), check its vitamin C content. A moderate dose (100 to 200 mg) should not pose any problem. If you are particularly sensitive or if you take high doses, it may be more comfortable to consume it in the morning.

Keep in mind that vitamin C is quickly eliminated by the body, and that an intake spread throughout the day can even improve its assimilation.

In summary

So, does vitamin C prevent sleep? Not really. While it is true that some supplements with high vitamin C content can have a slightly stimulating effect, this remains marginal. For the majority of people, consuming vitamin C in the evening, via food or supplements, has no negative impact on sleep.

The most important thing remains to ensure a sufficient and regular intake, especially during periods of stress or fatigue, to support the body's natural defenses. And if you have any doubt, test different times of intake to see what suits you best.
