Matcha is often touted as a miracle anti-aging ally. Delving into the studies, the reality is more nuanced: a real benefit, better established than we might think, but not necessarily the one most often attributed to it.

Why matcha is of interest for skin

Matcha differs from classic green tea in its consumption method: instead of infusing and then removing the leaves, the entire leaf is consumed, ground into a fine powder.

Matcha notably contains:

  • polyphenols;
  • catechins, including epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG);
  • amino acids;
  • minerals;
  • plant pigments, responsible for its characteristic green color.

It is this composition that explains the interest in matcha in the fields of well-being and skin health, particularly its potential role against oxidative stress, one of the mechanisms involved in skin aging.

 

What distinguishes matcha from classic green tea

A 2003 study compared the catechin content of matcha to that of classically brewed green tea, by analyzing the dry leaf.

Result: the analyzed matcha contained approximately 137 times more EGCG per gram of dry leaf than the compared green tea. Concretely, drinking matcha means ingesting a much larger part of the leaf's compounds, since it is consumed whole rather than just infused and then discarded.

This difference in method explains some of the specific interest in matcha, beyond what is already known about green tea in general.

 

The best-demonstrated benefit: UV protection

Among all the effects attributed to green tea and matcha on the skin, only one currently has solid clinical evidence: protection against damage related to UV rays.

What the reference trial shows

A double-blind, randomized controlled trial, conducted on 50 healthy adults for 12 weeks, tested green tea catechin supplementation (540 mg per day, combined with vitamin C) versus a placebo.

Supplemented participants showed specific protection of fibulin-5, a dermal matrix protein degraded by UV exposure, compared to the placebo group. The other markers measured (fibrillin, procollagen) did not, however, show a significant difference between the groups.

A systematic review confirms this limitation

A 2022 systematic review, covering 12 clinical studies using oral green tea, concludes that available clinical evidence only supports its use to protect skin from UV-related damage. For other studied skin uses, the results remain contradictory according to the authors.

 

Is matcha really useful against acne?

This is one of the most widespread arguments, but also one of the least supported by data when it comes to oral consumption.

A 2021 meta-analysis, grouping five randomized controlled trials, compared the effects of green tea applied to the skin to those of green tea consumed orally on acne lesions.

  • Topical application: significant reduction in inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions;
  • oral consumption: minimal effect on inflammatory lesions and virtually no effect on non-inflammatory lesions.

In other words, drinking matcha is unlikely to significantly improve acne. The benefits observed in the literature concern direct skin application, not the beverage. In cases of persistent acne, a dermatological consultation remains the appropriate approach.

 

Matcha and collagen: what's the real link?

Matcha does not contain collagen and does not provide the specific amino acids in the proportions necessary for its synthesis.

What research suggests is a more indirect mechanism: by limiting certain oxidative damage to the existing dermal matrix, as observed for fibulin-5 in the trial presented above, matcha antioxidants could help preserve skin structure over time.

This nevertheless remains different from a direct action on collagen production, which has not been specifically demonstrated for matcha to date. Supplements combining matcha and marine collagen rely on a synergy between the two, but each component then acts through a distinct mechanism rather than a common effect.

 

Limitations of current research

Several limitations deserve to be kept in mind before drawing overly general conclusions.

  • Most clinical trials focus on standardized green tea extracts, not specifically on powdered matcha consumed as a beverage;
  • the doses used in research (540 mg of catechins per day in the presented trial) are higher and better controlled than those of classic daily consumption;
  • the time needed to observe an effect is generally several weeks, not a few days;
  • few studies isolate matcha from other lifestyle habits of participants, which complicates attributing an effect solely to the beverage.

 

How to incorporate matcha into your routine

  • Choose quality matcha, less likely to contain additives or be heavily sweetened;
  • consume matcha regularly rather than in large occasional quantities, as the effects observed in research are based on prolonged daily intake;
  • combine it with real sun protection rather than substituting it, as the demonstrated protection remains partial;
  • integrate it into an overall balanced diet rather than expecting an isolated effect on the skin.
