What is Carnosyn® Beta-Alanine?

Beta-Alanine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid that serves as a precursor to the making of carnosine. It's only once in the muscles that beta-alanine is converted to carnosine. Thus, the greater the absorption of beta-alanine, the more carnosine the muscles make.

Who is Carnosyn® Beta-Alanine for?

Carnosyn® Beta-Alanine is for:

  • Athletes to improve their performance in strength and endurance sports (better muscle congestion and better resistance to fatigue).
  • Sedentary people for better health due to its anti-oxidant and protective effects.

When should I take Carnosyn® Beta-Alanine?

A dose of 800 mg of Carnosyn® induces a plasma peak of beta-alanine in the blood within 30 to 40 minutes. The increase induced by this intake will last for about 3 hours, which suggests that it is preferable, whenever possible, to take small amounts throughout the day. 


In addition, Carnosyn® can induce temporary skin tingling. In order to reduce their incidence, we recommend splitting intakes throughout the day. Indeed, these tingling sensations are very closely related to the concentration of beta-alanine in the blood. The more beta-alanine you take per dose, the stronger the increase will be, leading to tingling. 


By taking micro-doses with each meal, the risk of tingling is minimised while ensuring a continuous supply of beta-alanine, which promotes muscle conversion to carnosine. 


Similarly, it is advisable to take Carnosyn® with meals, especially those rich in carbohydrates, in order to optimise its assimilation.
If you drink during your training, the Carnosyn® can be placed in your bottle, which allows you to increase the dosage, while splitting the doses over a long period of time. Paradoxically, these tingling sensations can help you feel your muscles contracting better when working out.

How do I take Carnosyn® Beta-Alanine?

It is recommended that Carnosyn® Beta-Alanine be taken with a meal or a drink that contains carbohydrates.

Interactions with other Nutrimuscle products

Synergies between supplements

Effects of Beta-Alanine Carnosyn® on muscles

Strength athletes have muscle carnosine concentrations that are, on average, double those measured in sedentary people of the same age. Carnosine exerts six major types of known effects that may explain the increase in performance of power, strength and endurance.

1. The property of carnosine that interests the athlete the most is its ability to neutralize the acid that is generated during intense muscular effort. The rise in "lactic acid" in the muscles is usually associated with a drop in performance. By neutralizing the acid, carnosine delays the onset of fatigue. This peculiarity explains why there is on average two to three times more carnosine in type II muscle fibers (the strength fibers) than in type I (endurance fibers).

2. Carnosine increases the capacity of muscles to contract as a result of nerve impulses. By sensitizing muscles to intracellular calcium, nervous excitation produces stronger muscle contraction when carnosine is present in high concentration than when there is little.

3. Carnosine acts as an antioxidant. This property also explains many of the health effects of carnosine that we will describe below.

4. Carnosine produces an anti-inflammatory action, which in case of intense physical activity reduces the risk of overtraining (1).

5. Carnosine also acts as an NO booster which results in better congestion during training.

6. Carnosine promotes collagen synthesis which improves recovery after exercise.

Effects of Beta-Alanine Carnosyn® on Strength and Endurance

As without any supplementation, type II muscle fibers are naturally higher in carnosine than type I fibers, one would expect carnosine to improve strength more than endurance. For example, in men, muscle power at the end of a thirty-second sprint is directly correlated with muscle concentration of carnosine (the higher the level, the more strength the subjects have at the end of the course) (2) .

However, it seems that supplementation rebalances this difference by increasing both the carnosine concentrations in fibers I and II, but by acting all the more on the fibers which leave with the lower levels of carnosine.

On average, in a sedentary man, physical performance improves by 14% in one month of supplementation. For women, the average earnings are 12% (3).

In bodybuilding, in trained men, strength increases by about 9% in 1 month of supplementation at a rate of 4.8 g of Beta-Alanine per day (3).

In high-level rowers, taking 5 g daily for 7 weeks improves endurance by 2.8% (4).

The health benefits of Beta-Alanine Carnosyn®

It is estimated that 99% of the body's carnosine is localized in the muscles. This figure is however misleading because of the mass occupied by our muscles. Much smaller tissues like our olfactory bulb contain a lot of carnosine even if their level, expressed as a total percentage of the human body, appears modest.

Carnosine is also present in the lungs, heart, kidneys, spleen and even the brain ... (5 - 6). Carnosine can exert protective antioxidant effects there. These actions are both direct, but also indirect by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes. For example, carnosine increases intracellular levels of glutathione (7).

Beneficial action of Beta-Alanine on brain health
Although much less there than in muscle, the brain is the second major site of carnosine concentration in the body (8). Indeed, Beta-Alanine can easily enter the brain, the latter transforming it into carnosine. But for which physiological functions? Few studies have attempted to elucidate this question. The state of current knowledge mainly shows a protective role of the brain and the nervous system on the part of carnosine. The latter is promising in terms of prevention against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's (8).

More specifically, studies show that Beta-Alanine helps fight chronic fatigue (9 - 10 - 11).

Beneficial action of Beta-Alanine on heart health
Since the heart is a muscle, carnosine also produces contraction-enhancing effects. Apart from a health benefit, we also find there effects favorable to performance. Indeed, after a certain period of time, the heart tires during a prolonged effort which immediately induces a decrease in performance. By promoting cardiac contractions, carnosine facilitates the work of the heart and therefore its endurance.
