Protein hydrolysates: a new way of "fooling" the consumer
When you look for a protein hydrolysate, you expect to pay more, or even much more, than for conventional proteins. It is not uncommon to have to spend 50-100% more for the same amount of protein, because one expects to receive a very high quality protein.
Indeed, the consumer assumes that a hydrolysate necessarily contains 100% hydrolysate, i.e. 100% pre-digested amino acids or peptides and therefore 0% protein.
This belief is completely wrong. But don't count on the big supplement brands to educate the consumer on this subject. Why not? Because if consumers knew the truth about protein hydrolysates, they would simply stop wasting their money on them.
After all, no hydrolysate is 100% hydrolysed. If it were, it would smell like vomit and taste even worse than vomit. It would therefore be unmarketable.
How can you tell the difference between hydrolysates?
What makes the difference between the different hydrolysates is the degree of hydrolysis, i.e. the degree to which they are broken down into amino acids and peptides.
The leading producer in the market makes a whey hydrolysate with a degree of hydrolysis of only 5 to 7%. In many cases, the degree of hydrolysis is even only a few percent. The consumer's ignorance is clearly being played on in order to make him pay more for a protein that is slightly more sophisticated than the basic protein.
It is not for nothing that protein retailers "forget" to specify the degree of hydrolysis of the hydrolysate they sell: it is because it is low, or even negligible. This is clearly a marketing strategy to deceive the user.
What is the degree of hydrolysis of Peptopro®?
